The influence of the (often mis-inturpreted) Japanese concept of wabi sabi cannot be overstated in my work and life. This short video and the book it refers to is one of the select few that begin to capture what I understand to be a true taste of the wabi sabi asthetic.
The Process:After years of making short art films with a "zero budget", I stumbled upon the concept of crowdfunding for art thru "This thing called Kickstarter.com". This required making a short film to raise funds to make a short film, and other various hoop-jumping and cow-towing. And, of course, "Expectations are raised". Then discovering that having just a little money to spend to make a film can be worse than no money at all, because when suddenly there is a so-called "budget", everybody expects a day rate. On the other hand, working with creative professionals on a more elevated level helped me to understand the value of their crafts. There is a reason it's called "independent film" when you fund it yourself, no one is waiting for what they thought they were supposed to get. Keep it rugged.
