The Painting Techniques of Franz Kline

About 5 years ago, I fell in love with the paintings of Franz Kline. I had seen them in the past, but perhaps like the Tango one needs to reach a certain age before he/she truly begins to understand the complexity there-in. And so it was with me and my loose grasp of these broad, seemingly simple brush strokes.
But only when I began to attempt to replicate his masterful brushstrokes, did i begin to understand the layered complexity involved. The combination of fast, definite brush movements combined with mindful over-painting and subtle tonal redefinitions brought to me a much deeper understanding and appreciation of this quiet man's work. This video (by Barnett Newman of MoMA) is a good example of some of the things I learned ttrough trial and error.
